Renewing Items

Renewing an item will extend the item’s due date. Most items may be renewed up to 99 times unless the renewal is blocked.

A renewal may be "blocked" for the following reasons:

  • A hold or recall has been placed on the item.
  • The renewing patron's account has expired or is inactive.
  • The patron's account has a block on it. Possible reasons for a block include unpaid fines, overdue items, or failure to respond to a recall notice.
  • A privilege cardholder with 20 items charged must call in to renew. Privilege cards have a 20-book limit. Once reached, the account is “blocked” so items must be renewed by a staff member.

Items without Renewal Privileges

Likewise, some items do not have renewal privileges. Non-renewable items include:

  • All reserve items
  • Cameras and equipment
  • Study room keys
  • 2-hour current periodical items

These items must be returned when due. The item can be checked out again immediately if a second copy is available. Otherwise, there is a short wait until the item can be acquired again.

How to Renew

  • Interlibrary Loan items must be renewed separately using the online form.
  • Borrow Direct items cannot be renewed.
  • Cornell University Library items can be renewed on-line through the library catalog (click here for instructions), by calling the Mann Library circulation desk at 255-3296, or by sending an e-mail to mann_circ@cornell.edu.
