Know Before You Go: Library Hours & Services for Winter Break

Important End-of-Semester Information

As the semester winds down and winter break approaches, here’s everything you need to know about library hours, off-campus access, and returning materials.

🕰️ Building Hours

We’re almost at the finish line! For planning purposes, please note the following upcoming changes to library hours:

  • Extended hours end tomorrow, Tuesday, December 16

  • Regular semester hours resume Wednesday, December 17 through Saturday, December 20

  • Winter intersession hours begin Sunday, December 21:

    • Monday–Friday: 8:00am–5:00pm

    • Saturday & Sunday: Closed

Please note that the library will close early on Wednesday, December 24, at 3:00pm. We will then be closed for the winter holiday break from December 25 through January 2, reopening on Monday, January 5.

 

Our 24/7 spaces, including the contactless pickup area in the CALS Zone, will also be closed during this time. Be sure to collect any items you have on hold before 3:00pm on December 24.

🌍 Off-Campus Access: Take the Library With You

Heading out of town for winter break? The library can travel with you!

 

Whether you’re catching up on research from home or prepping spring courses from somewhere warmer, Cornell University Library resources are always within reach – wherever you are.

 

Two easy ways to access library resources off campus:

1. Start at the Cornell University Library website
Search and browse as usual. When you select a subscription-only article, journal, or database, you’ll be prompted to log in with your NetID for full access.

 

2. Install the Access Anywhere bookmarklet
Before leaving campus, add this handy browser tool (available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari). When you encounter a paywalled resource off campus, click the bookmarklet, log in once, and you’ll be recognized as part of the Cornell community, just like being on campus.

 

If something doesn’t load, it may not be part of Cornell’s subscriptions. A quick catalog search or a message to library staff can usually help point you in the right direction.

 

Stay cozy, stay productive, and bring the library along wherever winter break takes you!

 

📚 Library Returns

Before you head out for winter break, don’t forget to return any library materials you’ve checked out!

  • Most books can be returned to any campus library

  • Course reserves, laptops, and other equipment must be returned to the library where they were borrowed

Finals Focus: Settle In & Study @ Mann Library

Looking for a structured, supportive space to power through your final projects? Join us at Mann Library for Finals Focus: Settle In & Study, a three-hour study session built to help you stay on track during the busiest week of the semester. Using the Pomodoro technique, we’ll alternate focused work time with intentional breaks so you can keep your momentum without burning out.

 

Tutors from the Learning Strategies Center and the Knight Writing Centers—along with librarians—will be available for on-the-spot writing advice, research help, and study strategies. We’ll also have snacks and beverages to keep you energized.

 

The event takes place Thursday, December 11, 1–4 p.m., in Mann Room 160. Registration is required and limited to 50 students. You can register here: spaces.library.cornell.edu/event/15768653

Winter Break Hours 2024-25

It’s almost winter break, which means that Mann Library hours will be slightly different over the next few weeks, so be sure to plan accordingly!

 

  • We will close at 5pm on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
  • Mann Library will be closed from Wednesday, December 25, 2024 – Wednesday, January 1, 2025. We will reopen at 8am on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
  • Please note that our 24/7 spaces and our contactless pickup area will also be closed during this time period, so remember to pick up your requested items before 5pm on Tuesday, 12/24!

When we reopen on January 2, we will have adjusted hours for the winter intersession:

  • Monday – Friday, 8am to 5pm
  • CLOSED Saturday and Sunday
  • We will also be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025 for the MLK Jr. holiday.

Our regular semester hours will resume on the first day of classes for the spring semester, Tuesday, January 21, 2025. End-of-semester Stressbusters

It’s the homestretch of the semester, and Mann Library and the CALS Zone are partnering up to bring some much-needed stressbusters programming to the Ag Quad. Stop by for treats and coffee, some canine cuddles, or a fun arts & crafts activity when you need a brain break!

Late-night Hours

Attention night owls! Mann Library has extended hours during study week and finals. From Tuesday, December 10 through Wednesday, December 18, Mann will have the following hours:

  • Monday – Thursday, 8am to midnight
  • Friday, 8am to 8pm
  • Saturday, 10am to 8pm
  • Sunday, Noon to midnight

We return to our regular semester hours on Thursday, December 19. And don’t forget that the lobby, Stone Classroom (Mann 103), and the CALS Zone (Mann 112), are open 24/7! So even after the library closes, you still have a variety of study spaces to choose from.

World Soil Day Celebration: Community Art Event with Soil Painting

Join us for a community art soil painting event to celebrate World Soil Day 2024. Drop by the Mann Library lobby between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to paint a “soil creature”–representing some of the life forms to be found in healthy teeming ecosystems beneath our feet– using paints made from soil. These mini artworks will be compiled into a community art installation that will be on display at Mann Library for the rest of the semester.  Come celebrate soil life with us!

Screening and Conversation on Divisible: A Redlining Documentary

Please join us for a screening of Divisible, a documentary that focuses on the history and current impacts of redlining in the United States, highlighting the specific case of Omaha, Nebraska to illustrate how discriminatory housing policies continually affect people nationwide. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Associate professor Neil Lewis, Jr. of the Communications Department who is featured in the documentary, Associate professor in the department of Government Jamila Michener, Director of the Cornell Center for Racial Justice and Equitable Futures and Senior Associate Dean of Public Engagement at the Brooks School, and Lizzy Barrett, Filmmaker and Founder of Equity Media and Senior Video Producer for the Voter Formation Project.

Van Tienhoven Travel Award promotes professional growth & development for Mann staff

On Wednesday, November 29, Mann Library staff gathered with members of the van Tienhoven family for an award ceremony made possible through the generosity of the Ans van Tienhoven Memorial Fund. The travel award, founded by Ari and Ans Van Tienhoven 36 years ago and steadfastly enriched by their friends and family over these many years, provides opportunities for professional growth and development for Mann Library staff and librarians. At this year’s ceremony, Carson Williams, Collection Development Librarian and winner of last year’s travel award, presented a report on his trip to the New Mexico State Library’s Tribal Libraries Program. This award enabled Carson to learn about the success of the New Mexico State Library’s efforts in supporting and promoting libraries on tribal reservations, and insights gained have been invaluable for informing Carson’s own work in developing inclusive, accessible collections at Mann Library and the Cornell Library system overall.

 

The ceremony was also an opportunity to celebrate the winners of next year’s awards and hear about their proposals in more detail. Mann librarians Diana Hackett and Robin Gee received one of the two grants supported by the van Tienhoven Fund. The award will enable them to attend the 2024 Workshop for Instruction in Library Use being held at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Vancouver, an institution known for its ground-breaking work in critical and indigenous information literacy. While there, Diana and Robin plan to glean insights and strategies for building the capacity of Mann’s own instruction program for connecting with a diverse student body, increasing students’ confidence in proactive use of library services, and building skills in finding, assessing, and using reliable sources of information.

 

The second professional development grant made possible by the van Tienhoven Fund has been awarded to multimedia support specialist Ten Van Winkle. Ten will use the award to participate in the 2024 Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility in Libraries & Archives (IDEAL) Conference taking place in Toronto this coming July. Organized around the theme of “Sustainable Resistance and Restoration in Global Communities,” the conference will give Ten the opportunity to explore innovations, strategies and perspectives that will help them take a proactive lead in envisioning, advocating, and realizing inclusive practice in library services in a thoughtful and long-lasting way.

 

Mann Library thanks the family and friends of Ari and Ans van Tienhoven for their continued support, which has been fundamental to the success of our dedicated staff as we continue to develop inclusive, responsive services and resources for the Cornell community and beyond.

Take a break from your books and computers with Mann’s hand-stamping stressbuster! Materials provided for creating hand-stamped bandanas or t-shirts (or give your old clothes some pizzaz with new design features!). 

 

Late-Night Hours

Mann Library has extended hours during study week and finals. From Tuesday, December 5 through Wednesday, December 13, Mann Library will have the following hours:

  • Monday – Thursday 8am to midnight
  • Friday 8am to 8pm
  • Saturday 11am to 8pm
  • Sunday Noon to midnight

Night owls – don’t forget that the lobby, Stone Classroom (Mann 103), and the CALS Zone (Mann 112) are 24/7 study spaces! So even after the library closes, you still have a variety of spaces to choose from if you’re studying into the wee hours.

  • Mann Library will be closed from Saturday, December 24 – Monday, January 2. We will reopen on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
  • Please note that our 24/7 spaces and our contactless pickup area will also be closed during this time period, so remember to pick up your requested items before 2pm on Friday, 12/23!

When we reopen on January 3, we will have adjusted hours for the winter intersession:
